Sinfonia Music Director Named
Artistic Advisor for Seventh Annual September 11th Concert for Peace
in New York City. Annual concert presented by NYC based Musicians
for Harmony at Merkin Concert Hall
New York City-based
Musicians for Harmony has announced that conductor
Demetrius Fuller has been invited to serve as
Artistic Advisor for the seventh annual "Concert for
Peace" at New York City's famed Merkin Hall. "This is an
incredible opportunity and I am honored to be a part of it. It will be
nice to reunite with several members of the Iraqi National Symphony
that I had the pleasure of working with during our historic visit to
Northern Iraq last summer," states Fuller. Highlights of the
evening include the US premiere of "Janan-Requiem,"
composed by Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra's Music
Director Mohammed Amin Ezzat and will feature
Karim Wasfi, principal cellist of the Iraqi orchestra.
Maestro Fuller worked extensively with both Mr. Wasfi and the Iraqi
National Symphony during his historic trip to Northern Iraq in 2007.
At the time, Edward Wong of The New York Times described that somber
Baghdad event as follows: But the mood soon darkened for a piece
called "Requiem." A cello solo, it was slow and mournful and haunting,
composed as an elegy for his country. "It's just like a person who's
dying," the conductor, Muhammad Amin Ezzat, 45, said after the
concert, held on a recent evening at a fading social club in western
Baghdad." The hundreds of Iraqis and the handful of Western
diplomats in the audience seemed hypnotized, as did the burly guards
toting Kalashnikovs. The evening also features a premiere of a Walt
Whitman themed piece commissioned specifically for Musicians for
Harmony as well as performances by the Shanghai String Quartet and The
Knights whose directors, Colin & Eric Jacobsen, are
the new Artistic Directors of Musicians for Harmony. Colin
Jacobsen, a recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, first played to
critical acclaim at age fourteen as soloist with the New York
Philharmonic under Kurt Masur and performs frequently with the Chamber
Music Society of Lincoln Center. Eric Jacobsen has appeared with Renée
Fleming at the opening of Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, and on the
Late Show with David Letterman. For more information, please call
